Frequently Asked Questions

MYO2 Myofunctional Therapy

1. What is myofunctional therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a series of guided exercises that teach the tongue, lips, and facial muscles how to work properly. When these muscles function well, breathing, swallowing, chewing, and even sleep can improve.

2. Who can benefit?

Children, teens, and adults can all benefit. At Myo2NWA, we commonly see clients with mouth breathing, snoring, sleep issues, tongue thrust, orthodontic relapse, open-mouth posture, or concerns about oral development.

3. What symptoms does therapy help with?

Myofunctional therapy can support improvement in mouth breathing, snoring, low tongue posture, open-mouth posture, orthodontic relapse, tongue thrust, feeding and swallowing challenges, TMJ tension, and certain oral habits.

4. What does therapy look like?

You’ll receive a personalized program with step-by-step exercises that strengthen and coordinate the oral and facial muscles. Sessions are virtual or in-person and usually last about 30 minutes.

5. How long does therapy take?

Most clients work through therapy for 6–12 months, depending on age, goals, and consistency.

6. Is therapy painful?

No. Exercises are gentle, comfortable, and safe for all ages.

7. What age is best to start?

Children as young as 4–5 can begin, but therapy is effective at any age.

8. Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed, though many clients are referred by dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, pediatricians, and sleep specialists.

9. Do you collaborate with other providers?

Yes. We regularly coordinate with airway-focused dental, orthodontic, ENT, feeding, and sleep professionals.

10. What is the first step?

The first step is a full evaluation to look at breathing patterns, tongue posture, sleep symptoms, swallowing, and oral habits. Then we create a personalized plan.
